Go on a Junk Run to Find Treasures

In our neighborhood, we have bulk pickup every other week. So every other week, people put out items on the curb that may or may not be working that they no longer want. On face value, you might think, "so what, it's probably all broken and worn out items that should go to the land fill." But, you would not believe how much good stuff we have found on the curb. Here is just a sampling...

Vacuum cleaners
Giant wall mirror
Lamps
Weed eater
Lawn mowers
Computers
Flower Pots
Tvs
Small outdoor tables
3 drawer units
Upright fans
Ceiling fans
Cooler/Mini fridge
Scooters (manual and battery powered)
Power wheels
Bike trailers
Bikes
Light strands
Speakers
Wireless smart phone charger
Guitars
DVD, VCR, receivers, etc.
Sports equipment
Mini Christmas trees
Storage containers
Shoe organizers
Book shelves
Storage cubbies
Chest of drawers
Desks
Office Chairs
Futon
Misc. kids toys
Over toilet bathroom organizer
Kitchen cabinets
Fishing poles
Nice metal outdoor chairs and a bench

All of these items were working or just needed minimal maintenance type repair. I will include pictures of some of these items below to give you an idea of what we are talking about.

This cabinet provides some much needed toy and soap storage over the tub in our master bathroom. Our 6 year old still takes a bath in there and her stuff can easily take over the place!

We have had this for a few years and need to re-cover the cushion, but it looked great when we got it! The frame is also still in great shape! It gives us a great place to relax while watching our kids play out front since our front porch is too small for a chair.

This chair is my favorite place to hang out and watch my kids play in our back yard. It's so comfortable!

Our living room has a vaulted ceiling on one side which gives us a massive wall that we have never known what to do with. This big clock is the start of a collage we are going to create up there.

These gave us some much needed storage in our guest bathroom that had no storage. Not even cabinets under the sink or a counter top!

I use this to store my plant food, tools, starter pots, etc. along with any small plants I'm giving extra care to at the moment. I love it!

This is one of 3 power wheels that we have gotten from the curb! Even if they need a new battery, those are way cheaper than buying a whole power wheels toy!

One of two almost identical battery scooters my boys love to play on.

I love this outdoor table! It's teal and rustic looking. I keep it next to that great chair on the back porch!

Think outside the box! This heavy pot makes a great umbrella holder at the front door.

This watering can didn't hold water well, which is probably why they put it out, but it is so cute as a decoration in our front garden! We just drilled a few holes in the bottom to keep water from filling it up.

We also got our extra couch from the curb, but it did need a little love. The faux leather was peeling off. But it was still VERY comfortable and fit our newer house's larger living room great! So we are just going to buy a slip cover for it and call it done!

When you grab these treasures, you are helping out the planet by...
+keeping things out of the landfill a little longer
+preventing yourself from purchasing one of those items new
(which keeps a second item from going into the landfill)
+possibly keeping a recyclable item from being thrown away

We even grab items in good condition sometimes to test at home, give a quick clean, and drop off at a thrift store to head to a new home.

In our house, we lovingly call the bulk day "junk run" day. You could even find out the bulk day for other neighborhoods near you and check out what they put out!

One caveat: I would suggest you sniff test anything you are picking up because sometimes people put things out for trash because their pet peed on it or it got moldy. We always inspect everything closely and then give it a good wipe down after we get it home.

Happy hunting! Feel free to share any fun finds you have in the comments below!
